Effects of Nicotine

Do you smoke? If yes, have you ever tried to quit smoking? Do you know how Nicotine effects you? Trying to quit smoking is one of the hardest things to do because of the habit forming nature of this “legal drug.” I hope to present to you the addictive property of smoking (nicotine) and why it’s harmful to your body, how a smoking addiction can psychologically as well as physically effect your judgment, and lastly, offer you three of the most popular ways to quit smoking.
Addictions are common due to our nature. Human beings are creatures of comfort, habit, and pleasure. We’re going to be addicted to something as innocent as board games to something potentially harmful such as alcohol or smoking. Although smoking is habit forming much like other activities, the real addicting property in smoking is nicotine.
The reason nicotine is addictive is because it causes a change in the brain that make people want to use it. It stimulates the dopamine in the brain. Dopamine is a hormone that helps with learning, movement, and emotion. The stimulation of this hormone can cause a person to develop dependency. One warning of the excess of dopamine is that it has been linked to cause scitzophrenia.
You may be wondering how this effects your judgment. Psychologically, addictions are typically very hard to brain the first place, and since nicotine causes physical dependancy, if you try to quit smoking, you will feel withdrawals, a perfect sign that you’re hooked. Physically, nicotine, as a drug, develops a tolerance. If you do not quit smoking, your body will become use to the current amount of nicotine it is given, and will “need” to have more each time to get the same satisfying amount of stimulation. This is why nicotine has been cited as one of the hardest drugs to quit.
There are various ways you can use to try and quit smoking. Which one is right for you is unsure. Make sure you talk to a doctor before to attempt to quit smoking to see if he/she can suggest any methods that may work for you. But for now, these are three of the most popular methods of quitting cigarettes. The patch, a program, or cold turkey. Each of which have their benefits and downfalls.
I cannot suggest you quit smoking any stronger than I am right now. As I just presented, nicotine is highly addictive, it can effect your brain chemical balance, and I also offered you three of the most popular ways to help you quit smoking. The ball is now in your court, and it’s up to you to take the first step.
